SMS Greetings through the mobile phone has reduced the X'Mas and New Year greeting card sales in Sri Lanka. Ten years back X'Mas was a heavy working period for Sri Lanka postal service people. Every postman used to carry big bags of greetings in their bicycles and tried to deliver them in time.
As the technology is catching the common people, the amount of greetings handled by the postal department decreased in the recent years. Although many places like the Greeting card shops, Super markets and roadside vendors were with full of colorful cards, their business was very limited.
Specially younger generation people were sending colorful MMS, SMS text messages for their friends at the festive season. Even they helped their parents to send these greeting text messages using parent’s mobile phones to their parent’s friends and co-workers. Thus saving a lot of money for all of them.
The world is moving fast and people don't have time to go buy one card and then go to the post office and buy stamps and post the mail, which nowadays seems a big work. So the receivers of the text messages too were happy as they can send a reply message as "Wish you the same".
So if you got a greeting card by postal mail from a friend of you then he/she takes you as an special friend.
We suggest send SMS messages and don't forget to send one Greeting card too, that will make friendship more valued one.
