Using Premium rated SMS for competitions.
You have seen many competitions asking you to use your mobile phone to send answer. There with the * you will see premimum rates apply. Yes,when sending a SMS normaly cost US$0.1cent, Premimum Rated may cost you US$5 per SMS.
How this work?
The mobile service provider make available a premium number normally consisting of say 5 numbers. - For example 78787 as an example. The company sponsoring the SMS competition makes available a prize of some sort - say $ 5,000 in cash. The Sponsor then advertise the competition through their media channels for example radio, television etc.
Subscribers join the SMS competition by sending a SMS (this may be an answer to a question asked) to the premium number or short code 78787. Each of the SMS is charged at a pre-determined rate as agreed between the sponsor and the mobile service provider. Let´s say US$0.5 per SMS. Upon sending the SMS to the premium number, the participant´s mobile phone
bill is charged at the stipulated rate.
With the networks controlling subscriber billing (monthly subscriptions or prepaid SMS), they have the ability to bill the subscribers the US$ 0.5 per SMS sent to the dedicated premium number or short code 12345. The Sponsor and mobile network share revenue based on the terms and conditions stipulated by the network.
This is an agreement between the TV or Radio company and the mobile phone provider. The TV compny will inform the mobile service provider abiut the launch of the program. And how they much they need, and the mobile service will fix the price and when a mobile service client answer using SMS Service, he will be charged at the Premium rate. Then the profits will be shared between the TV and the Mobile Service provider.
These kind of Services recently started. In one way the Mobiel phone user is very happy in participating in the competition or service. But on the other hand he is not aware of the SMS service is charging him a high rate. So the Program organiser must publish the extra ordinary SMS rate in their program for the viewer or participant to understand clearly about the SMS sending charge rate.If dosen't comply they may prosecuted under the state Law.
