There is a big chase by the local mobile phone operators to catch more customers with low tariffs. It is expected that India’s “Airtel” too going to start its operation in this tiny island country in the year 2008.

Currently anyone can buy a SIM card for just 3US$. The only thing the buyer needed is a photocopy of his National Identity Card. Some mobile phone dealers even offer a SIM card for just 2.50 US$, for those people who are buying new phones from them. Mobile phones too are selling at very low price. A brand new cellular phone can be bought for just 38 US$, with one year warranty. While the young people are playing multimedia program’s in their latest 3G mobile phones. Sri Lanka’s No 1 service provider Dialog is currently offering 3G phone service-first in this south Asia region.

So no wonder all the folks are using mobile phone SMS and miss call method to communicate. For example, a working girl will send an SMS to her friend that she is coming from her home to the bus stand. Or she will get a missed call means that the friend is already at the bus halt. In the evening she will send a missed call to her mother meaning that she is already boarded the bus and want someone to accompany her from the bus stand if it is dark.

While many people use SMS reload method to top up their accounts credit from nearby mobile shop or communication centre, females prefer scratch and use pin number SMS reload cards. This will prevent those getting unwanted calls or SMS messages from some bad vendors who used to play with the phone numbers which were given for them to reload purpose.
